They love a windfarm in Franconia. In the countryside around Bayreuth, almost every ridgeline you can see has a couple of wind turbines plonked on top. Incredibly, it really doesn’t seem to spoil the outrageous beauty of this region.
I find wind turbines weirdly fascinating things. There’s something very pleasing about reinventing one of mankind’s oldest technologies to produce clean energy for our modern age. There is a sci-fi, alien quality to them which always puts me in mind of H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds, and yet, at the same time, there is something reassuringly familiar and comforting in the languid motion of those huge, slow-sweeping blades.
At a loose end between rehearsals, I decided to see if I could make some interesting pictures. The weather played ball, the gorgeous sunshine and swift-moving clouds providing a perfect backdrop for an afternoon of tilting at windmills.
